Helping children With Dyslexia - 21 Super Strategies To Ensure Your Child's Success At School.

Helping children With Dyslexia - 21 Super Strategies To Ensure Your Child's Success At School.

I am a primary school teacher and mother of three children who have all been diagnosed with dyslexia. When I started researching ways to help my children I discovered a real lack of information here is Australia. I also discovered a huge divide between what current researchers know about dyslexia and how to support children with it and what is happening in our schools to help children with it.

Dyslexia affects approx 10% of all Australian children according to research studies and many children continue to fall through the cracks leaving school early, often lacking in confidence and self esteem when in fact they are as intelligent as all other children. It is formal schooling which seems to hold them back. Teachers are not to blame either as there is no training for teachers provided by our tertiary institutions.

The state education departments in the UK, Canada and USA offer children, funded systemised access to early screening, diagnosis and learning support. As you are well aware none of these provisions are available to children in Australia. It seems we have fallen behind.

When I wrote my book, I really wanted to help families and teachers around Australia. It is written in plain simple English, includes lots of stories and comes with an MP3 DVD in the back so people can listen to it. I am also lobbying Government on a regular basis to improve our systems for helping children with dyslexia. Perhaps this way we will have more Richard Bransons and less teenagers leaving school disenfranchised with the thought of formal schooling when many are incredibly intelligent with much to offer.

Just so you know as I wrote my book I collected 1000's of resources and made them all freely available on my website www.helpingchildrenwithdyslexia.com I have also created another link from this website to the Australian Dyslexia Trust which enables individuals to leave their story about dyslexia for the politicians to read. I have already sent over 150 personal letters to Peter Garrett, Jan McLucas, Christopher Pyne and Julia Gillard. I am again collecting many more to send. I will continue to lobby until we see educational reform here in Australia. Please encourage people to leave their personal stories. Every story helps.

Thanks for helping me to spread the word. I appreciate your help.

Kind regards

Liz Dunoon

P.S By the way the book is available from the website www.helpingchildrenwithdyslexia.com or from any retail bookshop.

If somebody purchases the book they also get access to 3 free ebooks on How to Help Your Child Learn to 'Read', 'Write & Spell' and do 'Math' from home from the website These were chapters my publisher said would not fit in the book or it would become too long. They have proved very popular among parents who what to help their child at home.
