Report shows human rights Charter is having a positive impact
Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commissioner Dr Helen Szoke said that the 2010 report on the operation of the Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities shows that taking a human rights-based approach leads to fairer and more equitable government services and policies.
“Human rights are proving to be effective signposts for the consideration of real peopleâ€TMs needs at every stage of the government decision-making process,†Dr Szoke said.
“Community members and advocates are clearly becoming familiar with the language of human rights in their efforts to hold government accountable and secure improvements to services and policies.â€
Dr Szoke said that the report will be a vital resource for individuals and organisations wanting to contribute to the four-year review of the Charter, to be conducted by the Scrutiny of Acts and Regulations Committee, announced by the Attorney General last week.
