News from the Office for the Community Sector…
Business Planning for NFP Organisations Program
An enthusiastic response has been given to the Office for the Community
Sector’s new program on business planning for not-for-profit (NFP)
organisations. Eighty NFP organisations attended six workshops in Bendigo,
Shepparton, Narre Warren, Richmond, Sunshine and Geelong. Fifty-eight
organisations have signed up for a series of four individual mentoring
sessions that will run across the next six months.
The Business Planning Program has been designed in partnership with Small
Business Victoria (SBV) and the Small Business Mentoring Service (SMBS).
The program comprises group workshops followed by individualised mentoring
to help guide NFP community organisations through a simple process for
constructing a basic business plan. At the end of the program an evaluation
will be conducted and six case studies written to measure the benefits
gained by community organisations.

Planning for Growth Forum
More than 130 state, federal and local government and community sector
representatives gathered at the MCG on 22 November, for the Planning for
Growth Forum facilitated by the Department of Planning and Community
Development. During the forum, metropolitan growth councils (Casey,
Cardinia, Hume, Whittlesea, Wyndham and Melton) shared the challenges
they’re tackling in creating liveability in Melbourne’s fastest growing
areas.
Speakers from growth area councils presented the outcomes of community
infrastructure planning studies funded by DPCD. Reflecting on the varied
issues confronting growth areas, each council took a different approach.
For example, Wyndham City Council looked at how they could increase the
level of services provided by community service organisations to align with
their rapid population growth. The City of Hume investigated community
infrastructure requirements for their newest growth areas, particularly
Sunbury. The City of Casey undertook a 20 year Community Facilities Plan.
If you would like further information, the six Planning Study summary
documents will soon be posted on the Community Development section of the
DPCD website or contact Jenny Vizec on 9208 3660.

Women on not-for-profit boards: Not as good a story as you might think
Our Community Chair and founder of Women’s Leadership Institute Australia
(WLIA) Carol Schwartz earlier this year undertook some research on the
picture in the 50 top fundraising not-for-profits.
Despite the fact that around 70% of employees are female, only a third of
the directors and a third of the executives are women, and the next stage
in the filtering process – looking at Chairs and CEOs – cuts that down to a
quarter. And the bigger the organisation, the worse the picture: the WLIA
research found that in the biggest not-for-profits (those that fundraise
more than $40 million per year), women made up only 20% of CEOs, and only
10% of chairs.
A new Our Community-WLIA book, written with the support of the Alcoa
Foundation, is designed to help put the situation to rights: Get on a Board
(Even Better – Become the Chair). Get on a Board will form the backbone for
a women’s leadership training program – again, organised and delivered
jointly by Our Community, WLIA and the Alcoa Foundation – that will be
rolled out across the country in early 2012.
You can order a copy of Get on a Board at www.ourcommunity.com.au/books.
