Did you know the Victorian Guardianship and Administration Act 1986 is under review?
In March 2010, the Victorian Law Reform Commission released an information paper explaining Victoria's current guardianship laws, and outlining the issues the Government asked the Commission to review. The Commission invited submissions to the information paper and conducted consultations throughout Victoria on the issues raised in that paper. The publication of the information paper was the first stage of the review and the paper is available on the Commission's website.
The Commission has published a consultation paper in order to encourage community responses to some ideas for reform. The consultation paper explores how the law can be clarified and improved to protect the rights of people with disabilities who are unable to or have difficulty in making important decisions. The Commission's preliminary views are also outlined and a range of draft reforms proposed, accompanied by a number of questions.
Copies of the paper will be available at the end of February and can be obtained by calling the Victorian Law Reform Commission on 1300 666 555 or accessed through the Commission's website: www.lawreform.vic.gov.au.
The paper will be available in summary, Easy English and other languages. Please contact the Commission if you require the paper in a different format
The Commission encourages submissions commenting on the consultation paper. Submissions can be made in writing, on the Commission's website, or by telephone.
Submissions are due by 21st April 2011
The Victorian Law Reform Commission will meet with the Disability Advocacy sector on Monday 28 March from 10:30-12:00pm.
