Making the Link:
Start: 04:32PM Wed 7 Mar 2012
End: 04:33PM Wed 7 Mar 2012
Linking schools and early years services is recognised as an important strategy for supporting children and their families to transition smoothly to school. Linkages that support families to engage in their child’s education and enable schools and services to be responsive to the individual needs of children are critical to the process. Two initiatives that have adopted community partnership approaches to linking schools and early years services are the Victorian-based Linking Schools and Early Years and the Canadian-based Toronto First Duty initiative. This seminar presents the lessons from these two important initiatives.
The Linking Schools and Early Years Project has supported three Victorian communities to make practice changes and take actions to improve transition to school outcomes. After five years, the project is entering its final year and much has been learnt about the practice changes needed at the local level and successful community actions. These and other findings will be presented.
Toronto First Duty initiative has had a major impact on Canadian early years research, policy and practice. The key findings from this initiative will be presented by Prof Jane Bertrand. Jane Bertrand is a Professor at the School of Early Childhood at George Brown College, Toronto. She is an expert advisor to the Early Learning Advisor of Ontario, the Atkinson Charitable Foundation and the Margaret and Wallace McCain Family Foundation and a member of the Directing Committee of the Centre for Excellence for Early Childhood Development.
This seminar will be of interest to early childhood professionals, primary school educators, principals and staff, community child health professionals and local, state and federal government staff. We look forward to seeing you there.
